Oswego and Sackets Harbor are two of the most historically significant communities on the U.S. shore of Lake Ontario. Oswego, at the mouth of the Oswego River, was a key British and then American port during the colonial era and the War of 1812.
Sackets Harbor, about an hour northeast of Oswego, was the principal U.S. naval base on the lake during the War of 1812. Today it is a compact village with historic homes, a battlefield site, and a working harbor.
Together they make a low-traffic, history-rich loop along the eastern shore, with lake beaches, lighthouses, and small-town dining.

Fort Ontario and Safe Haven Museum
Fort Ontario is a restored star-shaped fort with views of the harbour. The Safe Haven Museum tells the story of Jewish refugees housed there during World War II.
Oswego Lighthouse and harbor walk
The lighthouse at the end of a breakwall is an Oswego icon. Access is limited; views from the shore and harbourwalk are reliable year-round.
Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site
The site of a key War of 1812 engagement, with interpretive trails, exhibits, and summer reenactments. Check New York State Parks for hours.
Sackets Harbor historic village
Walkable streets of 19th-century buildings, small shops, cafes, and lake views. The village has a relaxed, museum-without-walls feel.

Best time to visit
Late spring through early fall. Historic sites and beaches are seasonal; fall foliage along the eastern shore can be excellent. Winter is quiet and cold.
Getting there
Syracuse Hancock International Airport is about 45 minutes from Oswego and an hour from Sackets Harbor. Interstate 81 and NY-104 are the main routes. The area is best explored by car.
