Apple Maps adopts Lake America for U.S. users

Apple Maps began showing Lake America to users in the United States, Reuters reported on Sep. 1. Canadian users continue to see Lake Ontario, and users elsewhere see both names — the same country-by-country split Google described days earlier.

With the two largest consumer map platforms aligned on that approach, the label a traveler sees now depends mostly on which country their phone thinks it is in, not on which shore they are standing on.

That produces a genuinely strange experience on a ferry crossing: the same trip, the same water, and a label that changes when the signal does.
