Google Maps shows a different name depending on your country
Google Maps labels the lake Lake America for U.S. users, keeps Lake Ontario for Canadian users, and shows both names everywhere else — geography by jurisdiction rather than by cartography.
Google said on Aug. 29 that it would follow its long-standing practice of reflecting official local naming: U.S. users of Google Maps see Lake America, Canadian users see Lake Ontario, and users in the rest of the world see both labels. Reuters confirmed the rollout on Aug. 30.
That policy is older than this argument and is not an endorsement of it. Google applies the same logic to other contested names, which is why the same body of water can carry three different labels on three phones sitting on the same dock.
The upshot for anyone navigating: the pin is in the same place. Only the text under it moves.
