U.S. executive order directs federal rename of Lake Ontario to Lake America
On Aug. 27, 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. federal naming systems to use "Lake America." The order does not bind Canada or private mapmakers.
The executive order signed on Aug. 27, 2026 instructs U.S. federal agencies to use the name "Lake America" for the lake that American and Canadian records have called Lake Ontario. The practical effect is on U.S. federal systems, starting with the Geographic Names Information System that other agencies and many private data products read from.
What the order does not do is worth stating plainly. It has no authority over Canadian records, and Canada has kept Lake Ontario. It does not compel Google, Apple, MapQuest or any other private company to relabel anything. And it does not change the lake, which is still 193 miles long and still shared by two countries.
So the honest summary is that the United States changed what its own paperwork says. Everything that followed — platform-by-platform splits, an app-store surprise, a national poll — came out of everyone else deciding what to do about that.
